Retired - Show Prospects - Older pups

Occasionally we have 'older' Cavaliers available.  What is wrong with the animal?

Most times, the answer is NOT ONE THING!   They may consist of:

1.)  A pup we kept back as a breeding or show prospect which didn't come to fruition.

An older pup (6-18 months) is a pup we deemed a very good prospect for show/breeding but didn't turn out.  We often hear, "This puppy is GORGEOUS so why aren't you keeping it?"   There is nothing wrong with these pups as pets, they simply fell short in 'improving' our breeding program.  Some typical reasons might be: the pup was too small, had an incorrect bite or the male was crypt-orchid (un-descended testicle.)  Oftentimes breeder's opt to keep these pups because they're beautiful.  But our ''fur-kids" living underfoot, we MUST be ultra selective and only select what will IMPROVE our breeding program.  It's difficult for us to let these pups go; But a 'Win" for our waiting families!

2.)  Adult animals (between 1 and 5 years) who are being retired from breeding. The reasons range from single pup pregnancies that lead to C-sections, to moms that are more interested in people than their offspring!  So while beauty and structure are important breeding criteria, temperament is just as essential.  We won't breed a dam that doesn't 'enjoy' being a mother a second time.  While it's difficult for us to 'let go' of these animals, it's a huge 'win' for you since these animals have been seen routinely by Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Dental specialists.  They have lived their lives as our  pets, are potty-trained and dog-door trained, used to being groomed (don't be surprised if they start to go to sleep when trimming their nails) and understand many commands.  Naturally, we are very diligent in selecting the perfect 'fit' for them.  And lastly......

3.)  A returned (or fostered) dog whose owners were no longer able to care for them.   Many times, it's these displaced Cavaliers that you find in Rescues or shelters.  Should one of my pups come back to me, we will provide a home until a new 'perfect fit' is found.  It is our belief that these older dogs 'deserve' to have the best years ahead of them so we often look for a home where they can be the reigning 'King' or 'Queen' of a single doggy domain.

We place these 'fur-kids' for no charge since it is our goal to find the BEST home for them.  Sometimes the animal can have some sort of medical issue but live a normal life, provided appropriate medication(s) and or treatment is given.  Sometimes a simple change in diet (for a dog showing allergy symptoms or is overweight) is all that's needed.  With Cavaliers, it's typically a murmur but this too can be managed with medication.

So if you can not afford to spend $3000 (the typical cost of a well-bred Cavalier) but can afford to spend $1.50 a day for medications, it's a WIN-WIN for all!  The pup gets to be the resident 'King' or 'Queen' of their new castle and we're assured the dog has a nurturing home.  We never charge for these animals but do look for the 'perfect fit.'

Final words.....

Be assured that any animal coming to you has been provided with the highest quality food, supplements and medical care.  Socialization is just as important yet oftentimes overlooked.  We achieve this through: car rides, one-on-one play with people and other animals and most important, snuggling and more snuggling!  Oftentimes a 'rescued' Cavalier can present as distrustful or worse, as anti-social.  Thankfully, most will come around in a short time and be the happy-go-lucky companion they've been bred to be!

Please know that ALL DOGS (including mixed breeds) can have health problems.  Anyone telling you differently or who says "not in my lines" (and this goes for just about any purebred dog) is simply not speaking the truth.  Cavalier King Charles spaniels are no exception.  In fact, all Cavalier King Charles spaniels of today can trace their ancestors to less than a dozen dogs and as such, are ALL related to one another.  That said, occasionally a breeder gets very lucky in having a dog live to be over 14, but this is the exception and not the rule.  We feel it is our job to always be truthful by sharing what we have learned through personal experience and hope that other breeders will do the same.  Transparency about health is the only way we believe we can alleviate the health issues that affect this breed.
